Woman dies after being struck by car in Lewis

A woman has died after being struck by a car in an early morning crash in Lewis in the Western Isles.

Police said emergency services were called to the A859 near Balallan at about 03:45.

The road was closed in both directions between the isles of Lewis and Harris while investigations were carried out.

The force confirmed the road had reopened at about 17:30. The Scottish Ambulance Service said two ambulances were sent to the scene.

Police Scotland said: "The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The road remains closed for investigation work to be carried out and this is expected to take some time."
