The main vessel for the Highland's Corran Ferry crossing is expected to return to service later this month, Highland Council has said.

The MV Corran has been out of action since being withdrawn for maintenance work last October.

Repair work has been hit by delays but the local authority says they expect it to return on 23 October.

However that means it will it not be in service during the school holidays or the popular Mull Rally.

People planning to attend the rally, which takes place from 13-15 October, are being asked to plan ahead.

The Corran Ferry is the busiest single-vessel ferry route in Scotland and carries more than 270,000 cars each year.

It acts as lifeline service, connecting the communities of Fort William, Ardgour, Sunart, Ardnamurchan, Moidart, Morar, Morvern and the Isle of Mull.

There is currently no car ferry on the route, only a service for foot passengers.

The road alternative route includes a detours of 42 miles, adding over an hour to journeys.
