A 37-year-old man has died after falling into the North Sea from an oil platform.

The alarm was raised by workmates after the man plunged from Shell's Brent Charlie platform at about 1120 BST on Thursday.

He was rescued from the water by a support vessel but died onboard.

Aberdeen Coastguard said a Norwegian search and rescue helicopter from another oil platform also went to the scene.

A Shell spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with the family."

The Brent Charlie Platform is about 120 miles north east of Lerwick in Shetland.

The man is not thought to live in the Grampian area.
