An independent report into the North Sea oil and gas sector has said procedures for dealing with an oil spill need to be improved.

The review was established in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico last year.

The report, external - for the UK government - concludes Britain has a comprehensive emergency response framework and detailed procedures in place.

However, experts say several key improvements need to be made.

These include a clearer command and control structure in the event of a spill.

Energy Minister Charles Hendry has asked the industry and regulators to consider the recommendations and report back by July next year.
