Radon found in Orkney public buildings
- Published
High levels of the radioactive gas radon have been discovered at a number of public buildings in Orkney.
The council is already trying to reduce radon in a number of schools, but now says 11 buildings - including care homes and offices - are also affected.
Radon, which has been linked to cancer, is a naturally occurring gas which can build up, particularly under solid concrete floors.
Testing came about after a radon map of the UK was produced.
It showed Orkney had particularly high levels of the gas.
