Michael Ross: Murder conviction protest in Orkney

Supporters of a man jailed for the murder of a waiter on Orkney have staged a protest.

Former Black Watch sniper Michael Ross was 15 when Shamsuddin Mahmood, 26, was shot in the head in Kirkwall's Mumataz Restaurant in June 1994.

Ross was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years after being found guilty in 2008.

About 20 people gathered outside Kirkwall Sheriff Court to protest the conviction. They claim there has been a clear miscarriage of justice.

The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission has been asked to look at the case.

Ross' bid to have his murder conviction overturned was rejected by the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh earlier this year.

Ross, of Inverness, was then refused permission to take his appeal against his conviction to the Supreme Court.

Mr Mahmood, born in Bangladesh, was shot in full view of a room full of diners, including families with children, by a masked gunman.
