Percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie has backed Aberdeen's bid to be UK City of Culture in 2017.

The Aberdeenshire-born musician has many links with the city and is a patron of Aberdeen's International Youth Festival and its Sound Festival.

She urged the Aberdeen public to back the bid - claiming it could have an "incredible" impact on the area's arts and culture scene.

Dame Evelyn performed at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

The two-time Grammy winner led 1,000 drummers in a performance of a piece of music she wrote with Underworld.

She said: "I feel that Aberdeen has a lot to give. We've such beautiful surroundings around the city. We've a city brimming with culture, history and interesting people.

"People here should feel a real ownership of the bid. Everyone here should get behind it and celebrate what we can offer."

Aberdeen and Dundee have both applied to become the next city of culture, alongside nine other towns and cities from elsewhere in the UK.
