Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of SNP MSP Brian Adam in Aberdeen.

The member for Aberdeen Donside passed away last week, aged 64, after a battle with cancer.

The father-of-five's funeral took place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he was a member.

Mr Adam was described by First Minister Alex Salmond as an "exceptional" MSP

First Minister Alex Salmond said Mr Adam was an "outstanding politician and an exceptional human being".

Mr Salmond said: "He was a plain-speaking man, who did not need to use flowery language - because the passion of his commitment, loyalty and love spoke for itself.

"So, in that same spirit, let me simply say that Brian was a fine loon - which, as he would understand, says everything about a person that is good.

"And everything about Brian was good."

His family said they wanted it to be a "celebration of Brian's life and legacy" and had asked mourners to avoid sombre clothing.

Collections were taken for the Middlefield Community Project and Drugs Action, two charities which Mr Adam supported.

On Thursday, political leaders praised his contribution to Scottish politics and his bravery in the face of illness in a special motion of condolence at Holyrood.
