Moray Council drops Elgin link road plans over money

Moray councillors have voted to scrap controversial plans for a multi million pound Elgin link road.

The plans for the link between the A96 and Elgin's Edgar Road retail park have caused division in recent years.

Officials at Moray Council warned it was clear they could not afford to complete all building projects on the local authority's wish list.

Councillors voted by 13 to 11 to remove the road scheme from the capital programme. It will save more than £8m.

The leader of Moray Council, Stewart Cree, who had voted to keep the project in the plan, said it would be a grave error to abandon the project.

The motion to drop the project was tabled by Douglas Ross, who said that opponents of the link road felt it could not be a priority over other projects while the capital plan was unsustainable.
