Bid to support baby loss families in north east of Scotland

A fundraising drive has been launched to establish a dedicated unit for families who lose babies before, during or shortly after birth in the north east of Scotland.

Aberdeen Sands is a charity that provides support for bereaved parents.

Volunteers are attempting to raise more than £140,000 to fund a bereavement suite at Aberdeen's new Baird Family Hospital.

Women will be able to deliver stillborn babies.

The hospital at the Foresterhill campus is due to open in 2020.

One of the volunteers and committee members of Aberdeen Sands is Sandra Stephen, whose daughter Beth was stillborn 11 years ago.

She said: "The aim is to create a peaceful environment to bring some comfort to families at such a devastating time.

"This fundraising announcement coincides with a national campaign to highlight the fact that the death of a baby is not a rare tragedy."
