An 83-year-old man has died and two other pensioners have been injured after they were attacked at woods in New Elgin in Moray.
Police Scotland said the group was seriously assaulted at Birkenhill Woods at about 09:00 on Monday.
They were taken to Dr Gray's Hospital but the eldest victim later died. A man and woman, both 70, suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Det Insp Brian Geddes, of Police Scotland's major investigation team, said: "First and foremost, I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone within North East Division when I say my thoughts are with the family and friends of all those affected by this tragic incident.
"I know the circumstances will understandably cause concern within the local community, particularly because incidents of this nature are so incredibly rare."
Additional patrols are being carried out in the area while the investigation continues.
