The family of a bus driver who died after an alleged assault in Elgin say they are "shattered" by his death.

Keith Rollinson, 58, died at Dr Gray's Hospital in the Moray town following the incident at the bus station in the St Giles Road area on Friday night.

A 15-year-old boy has appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court charged with his murder.

The accused - who is from the Moray area but cannot be named because of his age - made no plea and was remanded in custody.

Keith Rollinson's family issued their statement through Police Scotland.

"On Friday, the kindest, dedicated and loving husband and father was taken from us," they said.

"Our world has been shattered - I cannot see us ever getting over our loss of our rock.

"We would like to ask for privacy at this time to deal with the loss without intrusion."

Stagecoach North Scotland expressed shock and sadness at the death of one of its drivers.

The Unite union has called for "stronger legal protection" for bus drivers.

General secretary Sharon Graham said the news had "shaken our union to its core".

She added: "The stark reality is that bus drivers regularly and routinely confront dangerous incidents.

"It has become an intolerable occupational hazard for bus drivers on a daily basis, especially for those working late at night and in remote areas."
