Planning approval has been given for plans to upgrade the former home of Sir Walter Scott in the Scottish Borders.

The Abbotsford Trust has successfully secured nearly £10m of funding to turn the building into a visitor attraction.

Proposals for a new visitor centre, car park, play area and upgrades to the main 19th Century house were agreed by Scottish Borders Council.

Planning officers had recommended approval of the scheme for Abbotsford House with conditions.

Earlier this year, the project secured a grant of nearly £5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Lord Sanderson, chairman of the Abbotsford Trust, has said the scheme could "create a legacy for one of Scotland's most important sons".
