Prince Charles opens Greenlaw Town Hall upgrade

Prince Charles visited Abbotsford House and Greenlaw Town Hall during his visit

Prince Charles has been in the Scottish Borders to officially open a £2m town hall refurbishment.

The Greenlaw building was in severe disrepair for many years but has now been renovated with help from the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust.

The royal visitor also travelled to Abbotsford House, the historic home of Sir Walter Scott.

During his stay he heard about plans to turn the site into a major visitor attraction.

After his visit to the Borders, Prince Charles will move north to Ayrshire.

He will stop at the Knockroon development site in Cumnock, on the land of the Dumfries House estate.

Greenlaw Town Hall has been brought back into use despite losing out in the BBC's Restoration programme.

A renovation project failed to secure support during the television series but work has now been carried out by the SHBT.

Plans for a £10m overhaul of Abbotsford House were approved by the Scottish government last year.

They include a modern visitor centre as well as a new car park and tourist accommodation.
