Innerleithen Caerlee Mill proposals put before public

A £4m proposal to redevelop a mill site in the Scottish Borders is to go out to public consultation.

Members of Scottish Borders Council's planning committee have endorsed the "draft supplementary planning guidance" for the Caerlee Mill in Innerleithen.

The favoured option sees the original Brodie's Mill building retained, but a number of others demolished.

The site would then be suitable for several uses, including light industry, commercial and visitor accommodation.

Interested parties have six weeks to make their views known on the scheme.

The site was occupied by JJ & HB Cashmere Mills - previously Ballantyne Cashmere - until January 2010 when the company was placed into administration with the loss of more than 100 jobs.

A "phoenix" company is now trading from a small section of the site.

The administrators of the old company have been marketing the site for sale for some time and the council understands the next step could be for it to go to auction.

The authority hopes the approval of a planning brief could encourage more potential bidders to take over the site.
