Teachers' worries raised over Dumfries 'super school' plan

Teachers' concerns over plans for a "super school" for senior secondary pupils in Dumfries are being taken to the region's director of education.

The possibility of using a single site for S4 to S6 pupils from the town's four secondaries surfaced last year.

Conservative MSP Alex Fergusson and MP David Mundell said teachers have contacted them with career concerns.

They will meet director of education Colin Grant to discuss how the proposals might develop.

Consultation on the scheme started earlier this year in the hope of reaching a final decision by November.

The idea behind the school is to broaden the curriculum for students in S4 and above - and improve links with the Crichton university and college campus.

Mr Fergusson said teachers had raised some issues about the prospect of the new facility.

"Some of them, I think it would be fair to say, are not quite sure how they would fit into this new system," he said.

"People are worried how their career paths would fit into that - it is a perfectly justifiable concern.

"I have no doubt at all that it is being taken into consideration but I need to know how to answer these queries that come to me."
