New Abbey Museum of Costume closure debate for MSPs

  • Published

A debate on the future of the National Museum of Costume in New Abbey has been held in the Scottish Parliament.

National Museums of Scotland has said high costs and reduced funding mean it has to take action at Shambellie House.

However, it has provoked cross-party concern about the possibility of closure and its potential impact on the economy of Dumfries and Galloway.

A call has been made for a 12-month reprieve for the site while options to keep the museum open are studied.

The Scottish Parliament discussed a motion by Labour MSP Claudia Beamish expressing concern at any plans to close the site putting nine jobs at risk.

A consultation is currently examining the way forward for the facility near Dumfries.

A final decision on the museum's future is expected this month.
