A suspected wartime bomb was discovered at a Dalbeattie sewage plant.
Workers were evacuated from the Port Road treatment works after the device was uncovered by a member of staff at about 13:00 on Wednesday.
An Army bomb disposal team was called to the scene and later removed what was described as a "tracer shell".
No controlled explosion was needed, and the device was taken back to the team's base in Edinburgh for disposal.
Police said the facility was located well away from residential properties.
