Plans to reduce the opening hours of the library in Wigtown have been scaled back

Plans to cut the opening hours of the library in Wigtown, Scotland's national book town, have been scaled back.

It follows public consultation on the move by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

It had originally proposed cutting opening hours from 42 per week to 17 but that has now been amended to 28.

The move is being made as part of wider savings measures across the council but Wigtown Booksellers' Association said it was still an unacceptable level of service for the country's book town.

Wigtown is one of a number of libraries which will see its opening hours reduced.

Operating times in Langholm and Moffat are set to fall to 20 hours per week and Whithorn to 12.

The proposals were agreed by members of the council's community and customer services committee.
