Borders to Edinburgh railway: Station work sees traffic changes

The one-way system will be in place for a little more than four months

Work on a new station in Galashiels as part of the Borders to Edinburgh railway is to see a new one-way system introduced in the town.

The move is to allow for "safe construction" at the Ladhope Vale site.

The temporary one-way system will be in place in the town from 27 July until 5 December.

The Borders Railway project said it had been working closely with Scottish Borders Council to identify the "least disruptive system".

Network Rail project director Hugh Wark said: "Network Rail and its main contractor, BAM, are making excellent progress on the construction of the railway through Gala.

"We've installed new bridges and prepared the railway formation in several locations already and we're now shifting our focus to the station works.

"To allow us to carry out these works safely, we need to put in place an adequate exclusion zone and that requires implementing restrictions on traffic and pedestrians using the north side of Ladhope Vale."

SBC leader David Parker said there was bound to be "short-term disruption" for such a major infrastructure project.

"I would like to thank the people of Galashiels for their patience so far and hope that they witness the investment and economic benefits the railway will bring when it opens in autumn 2015," he said.
