New Lowther Hills ski resort: First snow at Wanlockhead

Hardy snow sports fans have enjoyed their first day of the ski season in the south of Scotland.

Members of the Lowther Hills Ski Club are working to create a ski resort near Wanlockhead, in Dumfries and Galloway, where they are erecting a permanent ski tow and a club house.

The tow is not yet running however and on Monday Ross Dolder, of Moffat, Chris Penny from Leadhills and Des Reid from Edinburgh, spent two hours climbing the hill - for just 15 minutes of skiing.

He said: "It's always a pleasure to be able to ski on your local hills. It was amazing snow cover but it's really early in the season so there's no snow base on anything.

"We were on a mission to get some amazing pictures."
