Dumfries and Galloway pylon campaigners make sub-sea cable call

A campaign group opposed to plans for a major overhead power line upgrade has urged Scottish Power Energy Networks to consider sub-sea cables instead.
The firm wants to build a new line from South Ayrshire to Cumbria - most of it through Dumfries and Galloway.
Dumgal Against Pylons said alternative plans could meet energy needs while minimising the landscape impact.
SPEN said it would consider the proposal along with other feedback received during consultation.
Campaigners said an upgrade to sub-sea lines from Ayrshire to the English coast could reduce the visual impact of the scheme and the size of some new sub-stations.
'Expensive delays'
Alan Jones, who chairs Dumgal Against Pylons, said: "Our alternative plan aims to reduce the need for a new super-grid of pylons and yet meet current and future transmission needs.
"It may cost more at the outset but work could be undertaken in phases thereby creating more long-term, local employment.
"Our more sensitive approach will help to reduce local objection, minimise what could be lengthy and expensive planning delays, and large constraint payments."
He said he hoped SPEN would "engage" with the group in discussing the best way forward.
"It is essential for all parties to take a long term view to ensure the protection and preservation of our region for future generations," he said.
A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said: "We have received the Dumgal Against Pylons proposal, and are considering this along with the other feedback received as part of the consultation.
"We remain willing to meet with them to discuss their proposals further."
