A man is in a serious condition in hospital with injuries including a collapsed lung after an attack at a bus stop in Dumfries.
The incident happened at about 16:50 on Thursday next to Goldie Park on the town's Glasgow Street.
The 37-year-old victim was in the bus stop when he was struck on the head and then attacked while on the ground.
Police said that after the assault the suspect walked off in the direction of Goldie Park.
He has been described as a white man, aged between 35 and 45, 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall and of medium build with short/medium length dark and grey speckled hair.
He was wearing a dark jacket and navy blue denim jeans.
Det Con Rowan Buckly said: "I know this is a busy route in and out of town and I believe a number of people will have driven past this bus shelter at the time of the assault."
Police are currently checking CCTV in the area and carrying out door-to-door inquiries.
They have appealed to anyone who was in the area who may have seen the attack or who has any information to contact them.
