Cordon on Balmoral Road

Police are searching for a man who subjected a woman to a "frightening ordeal" in her own home.

The 49-year-old woman was attacked and robbed by the man who forced his way into the property in Dumfries.

She was treated in hospital for minor injuries following the attack in the property in Balmoral Road at about 22:00 on Sunday.

The street was sealed off for several hours following the incident while police carried out investigations.

A cordon remained in place around The Pleuchie's Howff and a number of neighbouring homes on Monday morning.

Det Sgt Colin McKinstry said: "This was a very frightening ordeal for the woman concerned who was within her own home when she was targeted.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have heard a disturbance to get in touch with police.

"Thankfully the woman was not seriously injured, however, she has been left extremely upset as a result.

"It is imperative we find who is responsible and I am hopeful that someone will have information that could assist with our enquiries."

The man who carried out the assault was white, and between 5ft 6in and 5ft 7in tall. He was of slim build with a gaunt facial appearance.

He was wearing a black zip-up waterproof jacket, dark trousers and a black woolly hat.

Det Sgt McKinstry added: "Whilst I understand people in the area will be concerned, I'd like to take this opportunity that we are working hard to identify the person responsible and would like to remind local residents that incidents such as this are rare.

"If anyone has any concerns about home or personal safety, please contact your local community policing officers who will be happy to provide advice."
