A 93-year-old man has died in a single-car crash on the A710 in the south of Scotland.

William Barbour died in the incident a few miles west of Dumfries just before noon on Thursday.

A black Land Rover Discovery Sport had left the road and Mr Barbour was found unresponsive in the vehicle.

Police Scotland said he was taken by ambulance to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.

The road between Dumfries and New Abbey was shut for several hours as the investigation into the incident continued.

Sgt Neil Moffat said: "Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the man who died and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.

"We believe the black Land Rover Discover Sport was travelling northbound on the A710 at the time and are appealing for any motorists, particularly with dashcams, who were on the road and may have seen the vehicle involved."
