The University of Stirling has announced it is investing £750,000 in new sports science facilities.

The development at the Gannochy Sports Centre, funded by the university and Sport Scotland, includes two new performance labs.

They will be used by the 80 sports scholars at Stirling University and 600 other top athletes in Scotland.

Some of the facilities will also be available to the local community. Building work will begin in March.

As well as the new labs, space at the Gannochy centre will be redesigned to provide physiotherapy treatment areas and consultancy rooms for doctors and nutritionists.

Swimmer Jak Scott, a silver medallist at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and student at Stirling, said the new facilities would help make "smarter athletes".

"It also helps our coaches to tailor our training schedules. All the extra knowledge gained in the laboratory helps to improve our performances in the pool - which is what it's all about," he said.
