Violinist Nicola Benedetti is to play on the main stage at Scotland's biggest pop and rock music event, T in the Park, it has been announced.

The Scottish musician will be the opening act on Sunday 8 July.

This year's festival takes between 6 and 8 July and is expected to draw more than 85,000 music fans to the site at Balado near Kinross.

Snow Patrol and Kasabian will join The Stones Roses as the main stage headliners.

Other acts performing include New Order and Tinie Tempah.

Benedetti, who was brought up in Ayrshire, won the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004, at the age of 16.

She has since made five classical music albums and played as a soloist with orchestras around the world.

In August she will join the London Symphony Orchestra at the Usher Hall as they perform the complete Szymanowski and Brahms symphonies as part of the Edinburgh International Festival.
