Cheers as Andy Murray returns to UK after US Open victory

Andy Murray has flown back to the UK after his victory in the US Open.

The Scot's victory over Novak Djokovic in New York saw him become the first British male tennis player for 76 years to win a grand slam title.

Murray, who also won Olympic gold this summer, was cheered as he was greeted by airport staff and members of the public at Heathrow in London.

The 25-year-old posed for pictures with holidaymakers and airport staff as he collected his luggage at Terminal 5.

Murray's victory on Monday night sparked celebrations in his home town of Dunblane.

He has been offered the freedom of nearby Stirling in recognition of his achievement.

Meanwhile, MPs from all parties have signed three different motions congratulating Murray on his success at the US Open.

The early day motions pay tribute to his "talent, dedication and hard work" and recognise his contribution to a "tremendous golden summer for British sport".

Murray's victory earned a round of applause in the chamber of the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday, and was also discussed at a meeting of the Scottish cabinet.
