Grass fires hit parts of Scotland as sunny spell continues

Firefighters across Scotland have been tackling grass fires, as the dry, sunny weather continues.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said three fire engines had attended a three acre fire near the village of Crook of Devon in Perthshire.

Crews in the Grampian area have also been dealing with a number of small grass fires in forests and scrubland.

There are no reports of any injuries relating to the fires nor any damage to property in the areas.

Tinder conditions

The fire service, covering the north area, had urged the public to be extra vigilant over the weekend.

Assistant chief officer Robert Scott said: "We have seen a number of grass and wildfires in the North area over the last couple of weeks.

"In these tinder dry conditions even the smallest of outdoor fires can quickly get out of control which can be devastating to the environment and wildlife and put properties, the public and our firefighters at risk.

"Members of the public should not to use camp fires or barbeques in the countryside during such hot and dry conditions, and should take care not to carelessly discard cigarettes, glass bottles and rubbish when out and about."

He also suggested keeping a bucket of water or sand beside garden barbeques.
