Scottish football figures attend Frank Kopel funeral

A service of celebration was held at the Old Parish Church in Kirriemuir.

Scottish football stars past and present turned out for the funeral of Dundee United's Frank Kopel.

Mr Kopel passed away after a battle with dementia which led his wife Amanda into a high-profile awareness campaign.

United chairman Stephen Thompson, former captain and manager Paul Hegarty and Walter Smith were among the big names from the Scottish game present.

The club will hold a minute's applause before their match against Motherwell at Tannadice on Saturday.

Mr Kopel, who was inducted into the Dundee United Hall of Fame in 2011, made 407 appearances for United and lifted two trophies over 10 years.

He passed away last week aged 65, having been diagnosed with a mixture of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease in 2009.

Former Dundee United player and coach Walter Smith paid his last respects at the service.

His wife Amanda mounted a campaign to raise awareness of the strain on carers looking after people with early-onset dementia, and addressed the Scottish Parliament's public petitions committee.

She has called for free personal care for people under 65 who have been diagnosed with dementia, and health secretary Alex Neil pledged to bring her concerns to Parliament after meeting the couple at their Kirriemuir home last month.
