A man has been charged with attempting to murder an M&S worker in Dundee by repeatedly hitting him on the head with a bottle.

Robert Gray, 40, is accused of breaking into the Gallagher Retail Park store in the early hours of Wednesday.

Prosecutors allege Mr Gray stole food and drink before struggling violently with the 46-year-old employee and assaulting him to his severe injury.

He made no plea at Dundee Sheriff Court and was remanded in custody.

It is alleged the offences were committed while Mr Gray, of Dundee, was the subject of six bail orders.

Officers were called to the retail park's M&S Foodhall at about 04:00 on Wednesday.

Police said the employee remains in a serious condition in Dundee's Ninewells Hospital.

The shop was closed for two days while a police investigation was carried out.
