Allen and Daniels play the role of ageing rockers who come up with a spoof band scam

Actors Keith Allen and Phil Daniels are to star in Vinyl, a movie based on a hoax which saw Alarm frontman Mike Peters score a hit with a spoof band.

Peters and his band recorded a comeback single in 2004 to expose ageism in the industry, and recruited younger band The Poppy Fields to release it.

Filming has started in Rhyl, Peters' Denbighshire home town, and that of director Sara Sugarman.

Allen and Daniels will play ageing rockers who come up with the scam.

Peters put together the fictitious act after he struggled to gain airplay and interest in his later work.

He came up with a plan to assemble The Poppy Fields, a group of teens who lip-synched to the track 45 RPM and starred in the video.

Peters came clean after the track made the top 30.

In their roles, Daniels - famed for roles in the soap EastEnders and also Strictly Come Dancing - and Allen, the father of singer Lily, cook up the plot after meeting an old band mate at a funeral.
