Major routes in Wales are to be upgraded under a £4.8m road improvement plan.

The Welsh Assembly Government has identified seven schemes on trunk roads for investment.

The projects range from carriageway repairs to tunnel safety work and are part of a bigger £47m capital investment.

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said it would provide "much-needed support" to the construction industry.

Recognised problem

Roads in line for improvement include the A55 Pen y Clip tunnel, the M4 at Brynglas and at Bishton, the A4042 Llantarnam bypass, and the A40 Brecon to Llandovery will get urgent repairs after damage in the winter freeze.

Mr Jones said: "This investment in our trunk road infrastructure will not only improve the safety and condition of our network but also provide much-needed support to the construction industry as Wales continues its fragile economic recovery."

The improvements at A55 Pen y Clip tunnel in Conwy includes public address system inside tunnel and also better emergency signing and lighting.

Mr Jones said that persuading drivers and passengers to quickly evacuate their vehicles in the event of a fire is a recognised problem.

The presence of an adequate public address system is seen as assisting the safe self-evacuation following a road traffic collision.
