Large grass fires tackled by crews across Wales

Efforts to extinguish the fire on Llantysilio Mountain above Glyndyfdwy, which burned for over 20 hours, were hampered by strong winds

Firefighters across Wales have tackled a series of large grass fires.

In north Wales crews fought two blazes, including one at Llantysilio Mountain near Llangollen, Denbighshire, which was burning for over 20 hours.

Mid and West Wales firefighters tackled four separate fires in the Swansea and Cymer areas on Wednesday evening.

Their counterparts from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service were busy in Aberdare, Tonypandy and Maesteg.

None of the blazes were said to be threatening life or property.

Fire crews fought a fire at Mynydd Llandygai near Deiniolen, Gwynedd

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it sent five pumps to a fire at Mynydd Llandygai near Deiniolen, Gwynedd, which had spread across 20sq m.

It said the other large fire on Llantysilio Mountain was reported just before midnight on Tuesday.

Four teams of firefighters were drafted in as a relief crew - from Wrexham, Corwen, Cerrigydrudion and Chirk fire stations.

The service said the operation had been hampered by strong winds.

Firefighters tried to control the flames in a 150sq m area using beaters, and a specialist vehicle from Chirk fire station was also used.
