Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff has become the first patron of the Tom Maynard Trust, which was set up after the death of the young Surrey cricketer.

Flintoff, a former England all-rounder said he was honoured to represent the body, which will help aspiring disadvantaged cricketers.

Cardiff-born Maynard, 23, a former Glamorgan player, was hit by a London Underground train in June.

Last week Flintoff joined a bike ride from Cardiff to London for the trust.

The ride from the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff to the Kia Oval in London raised £30,000.

Flintoff said: "The cycle ride was a great example of people coming together to work for a fantastic cause and I look forward to being able to support Matthew and the trust in many different ways in the future.

"It's a privilege to be involved."

Maynard - the son of former England and Glamorgan player Matthew Maynard - was hit by a tube train in Wimbledon on 18 June.

An inquest was opened and adjourned until 24 September.

More than 1,000 people attended his funeral on July 4 at Llandaff Cathedral.
