April Jones abduction: Search teams 'disappointed'

Teams who searched overnight for a five-year-old girl from mid Wales who disappeared on Monday say they are "disappointed" not to have found her.

Around 80 mountain rescuers looked for April Jones from Machynlleth as part of a large search on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, police appealed for information about the movements of a man, Mark Bridger, arrested in connection with April's disappearance.

They also asked for information about the suspect's Land Rover Discovery.

Mountain rescue teams helped scour the countryside around Machynlleth overnight in the hope of locating April who was last seen "willingly" getting into a vehicle by friends near her home on Monday evening.

Mark Jones, deputy leader of Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, said conditions had been "rough" overnight.

He said mountain rescuers from mid, north and south Wales were involved, along with search dogs from north and south Wales.

He added: "The teams were steered by police search advisers and searched areas including the local golf course, parkland, gardens, housing estates, industrial estates, rivers, quarries and more traditional mountain rescue areas such as hillsides.

"We also had search dogs from north and south Wales.

"We're doing everything we can to help.

"There were about 80 trained mountain rescuers working yesterday and everyone just pulled together.

"It was busy last night because there were so many people to task and so many areas that needed searching.

"The weather was really rough at times, but the guys got on with it and did the job.

"We were disappointed not to find April, but we are back today."

Derek Roberts, Coastguard sector manager, said 39 people from the service, split into four teams were searching a three-mile stretch of the River Dyfi between Cemmaes Bridge and Dyfi Bridge.

Mr Roberts said seven coastguard teams from around mid and north Wales were taking part, including Aberdyfi, Anglesey and Aberystwyth.

Police have asked for some of the local volunteers search teams to rejoin the hunt.
