Eisteddfod in £50,000 surplus after Vale of Glamorgan festival

Next year's festival is being held in Denbigh

National Eisteddfod bosses say it made a surplus of £50,000 after this summer's annual cultural festival.

They praised local people for raising £300,000 towards the costs of the event in the Vale of Glamorgan in August as well making £200,000 in savings.

Chief executive Elfed Roberts said the achievement came despite continuing difficult economic conditions and with London hosting the Olympic Games.

The announcement came as council members met in Aberystwyth on Saturday.

The council was also presented with a report with recommendations for changes to future events including more promotion of simultaneous translation and ensuring that stalls on the showfield or maes stay open later.

The next eisteddfod is due to be held in Denbigh, Denbighshire, in 2013.

Mr Roberts said the Denbighshire and district local fund for next year's eisteddfod has already reached £231,000.
