The royal couple soon made friends with the metal monsters - one of the most feared creatures in the show about the time-travelling Doctor - which were gold-coloured to mark the programme's 50th anniversary.

That included meeting actor Matt Smith, who plays the eleventh Doctor, and Jenna Louise Coleman, who plays the Doctor's companion. They posed for pictures moments before heading into the Tardis, the Doctor's time-travelling space ship.

They soon learned that the Tardis is bigger on the inside than on the outside. Matt Smith and Jenna Louise Coleman showed the royal couple how the Doctor's time-travelling spaceship works.

The cast of monster introduced to the couple included the Ood, a telepathic race with tentacles on their face. The Duchess of Cornwall appeared curious about their make-up.

The Doctor's weapon of choice is his sonic screwdriver. Prince Charles wasted no time in trying it out during the visit to the BBC's Roath Lock studios in Cardiff Bay.
