Rugby League World Cup launched with stadium spectacular

The Rugby League World Cup has been launched with a spectacular show under the closed roof of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff

Around 1,500 performers took part in the event, to launch the biggest sporting occasion in the UK since the 2012 Olympic Games

Former Wales rugby union captain and rugby league convert Gareth Thomas made an appearance

England fans looked forward to the opening game against Australia which followed the opening ceremony

Fans of the Australia team - known as the Kangaroos - were also out in force
