Bonfire night route changes 'for safety' says Cardiff Bus company

Safety fears over bonfire night have prompted a bus company to make changes to routes.

Cardiff Bus has amended services in parts of Cardiff and Barry as a "preventative measure to ensure the safety of passengers and drivers".

Twenty bus windows were smashed on one night in 2009, with regular anti-social behaviour problems around the Halloween and bonfire night period.

The company said the changes were based on intelligence from police.

The diversions will affect routes travelling to Barry and areas of Cardiff including Tremorfa, Splott, Ely, Butetown, Llanrumney and Pentwyn.

Passengers are asked to check the Cardiff Bus website for more detail on the routes affected.

Simon Mohammad, the head of operations at Cardiff Bus, said that in previous years there had been incidents of anti-social behaviour, particularly around Halloween and bonfire night.

"Therefore, our diversions are a preventative measure to ensure the safety of our passengers and drivers," he said.

Similar changes had been put in place in previous years, the company added.

There were three incidents of anti-social behaviour in the lead-up to Halloween last year but no incidents before bonfire night.

Supt Danny Richards, from South Wales Police, said: "We want people to enjoy themselves but we would encourage those who are out and about during this period to act responsibly in order to minimise disruption to our communities."
