Jeremy Brooke's family said they are "devastated" by his death

A mother has said she and her family are "devastated" following the death of her 32 year old son in a shooting in South Africa.

Jeremy Brooke died in hospital after being shot twice when the property in which he was staying with friends was burgled, said South Wales Police.

His family in North Cornelly, Bridgend, described the death as "senseless".

South Wales Police said police in Transkei, south of Durban, have made five arrests since February's incident.

Traveller Mr Brooke, who had dual citizenship, worked for local firms like Sony, Bridgend, and a local recycling centre before going travelling, said his mother Marian.

"His family and many friends are devastated by the loss of one who, with his passion for life and minutiae, enriched their lives by his very being," said his family in a statement issued by police.

"Jeremy loved South Africa and it is regretful that such senseless and criminal violence is robbing the country of so many valuable, proud citizens."

They added: "Shocked as we are, we would like to express our gratitude for the support we have received from both the South African police and the Australian and British High Commissions and would like to thank them for the role they played and the assistance they provided at this very difficult time."

They said Mr Brooke was a qualified diver and boat skipper as well as a diesel mechanic which took him to the Philippines last year to work on a TV series.

South Wales Police have appointed a specially trained family liaison officer to support the family.

The UK government has issued safety advice for travellers visiting South Africa.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."
