Estyn chief inspector Ann Keane says more needs to be done to help employers to take on apprentices

Problems with language and cultural differences are stopping people taking up apprenticeships, an education watchdog has warned.

A survey by Estyn revealed black and minority ethnic groups and those with disabilities are the worst affected.

The education watchdog said more needed to be done to promote apprenticeships.

The Welsh Government should make sure employers are aware of the support available to them when taking on apprentices, said Estyn.

Chief Inspector of Estyn Ann Keane said: "There are many reasons why learners may be discouraged from applying for an apprenticeship.

"Some of these reasons include a lack of awareness among parents, learners and employers of what apprenticeships can offer."

She added that difficulties with language and communication can also contribute to a lack of engagement on all sides.
