Aberystwyth University hope Fferm Penglais Halls will be "amongst the best" at any UK university

Aberystwyth University's delayed £45m halls of residence will not be ready until after the Christmas holidays.

The 256 students, who were due to move into the accommodation at the beginning of October, have been receiving up to £35 compensation a week.

The university said it did not want to compromise quality for speed.

Contractors Balfour Beatty apologised for the delay and said they hope students will be "delighted" with the new accommodation.

Business student Joshua Stacey, 20, said: "The delay has been very annoying, especially in the exam period.

"To be fair they [Aberystwyth University] have been pretty quick with giving us somewhere else to stay."

A university spokesperson said: "The university is confident that the new accommodation provided at Fferm Penglais will be amongst the best available at any university in the UK."

The university hopes to help students move to the new halls in January 2015.
