National Grid pledges to limit Anglesey pylons impact

Controversial overhead power lines across Anglesey are the preferred option for the planned £8bn Wylfa Newydd nuclear station.

But National Grid (NG) has ruled out pylons for an area of outstanding natural beauty so cables will run underground and beneath the Menai Strait.

The route will broadly follow the path of existing pylons, from the station near Cemaes Bay to a substation at Pentir, Gwynedd.

NG excepted many will be disappointed cables would not run all the way under the sea.

Chris Isaac of NG explains the technical and costs implications behind that decision while Manon Lewis of Natural Resources Wales, which wanted NG to pursue the all-undersea option, says it will be looking to minimise the environmental impact.
