Gusts of up to 70mph have hit Wales with a warning that more severe weather and possible flooding are to come.

A band of rain passed over mid, south and west Wales on Friday and gusts of between 60 and 70 mph were recorded in south Wales before 09:00 GMT.

The Met Office has issued an amber "be prepared", external warning for heavy rain and strong winds in Gwynedd, Conwy and Denbighshire over the weekend.

A yellow "be ready", external warning is in place for other parts of north and mid Wales.

The Met Office said "heavy and persistent" rain is expected, especially over hills, on Saturday and Sunday.

It warned that this could lead to flooding because rivers will be high after the recent heavy rainfall.

The areas affected by Friday's weather warning were Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Swansea, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan.

Winds were expected to remain strong and gusty throughout the day.
