War bulletin: Mametz soldiers hailed as heroes

A century ago, on 13 July 1916, the name of Mametz Wood was in every newspaper.

The success of British troops in taking the area from Prussian Guards was being hailed.

The scale of losses - more than 4,000 dead, wounded or missing, and most of them from the 38th Welsh Division - was not then known.

Neither was the nature of the ferocious fighting, nor the names of those who had died there - like the brothers killed, one trying to rescue the other.
