Bangor University student deportation 'brutal thing to do'

Any student seeking asylum should be able to finish their education without facing threats of deportation, the National Union of Students (NUS) Wales has said.

The union is supporting a campaign to stop Bangor University student Shiromini Satkunarajah from being deported to Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old, who is in the third year of an electronic engineering course, has been taken to a detention centre after being refused asylum.

The Home Office said it did not routinely comment on individual cases, but considers each one carefully.

NUS Wales deputy president Carmen Smith said deporting Miss Satkunarajah just three months before she graduates was a "brutal thing to do".
