Weather warning: Heavy rain causes flooding in south and mid Wales

Heavy rain has caused localised flooding and travel disruption across mid and south Wales.

Fire crews have been dealing with localised incidents, including a wall collapse and a callout to a 90-year-old woman's flooded home, although a yellow warning for rain has since been lifted.

A man also had to be rescued from his vehicle after it hit flood water.

Flood warnings and alerts are in place on dozens of rivers, according to Natural Resources Wales.

There are several road closures in Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taff, with speed restrictions due to strong winds on the M4 and M48 bridges in Monmouthshire and the A55 Britannia Bridge on Anglesey.

A wall also collapsed, with 50 tonnes of rubble blocking an access road to about 30 homes in Gwynedd.

The debris fell on to the Garth Road between Porthmadog and Borth-y-Gest.

Contractors are clearing it and the road will be assessed on Saturday to see if it is safe to re-open.

A council spokesman said the weather may have exacerbated an existing problem, adding: "Until the site is made safe, the road will remain temporarily closed."

Fire crews have also been dealing with a number of incidents in south and mid Wales.

Crews plus the police helicopter were called to the River Taff on Bridge Street, Llandaff, Cardiff, after concerns a kayaker was missing.

"We had a call after a red kayak was spotted in the water," said crew manager Matt Norman.

"Luckily the group were located further downstream. It's a good outcome because we would be concerned entering the water with our powerboat let alone a kayak."

In Rhondda Cynon Taff, floodwater had to be pumped from a house after a wall and drain collapsed at Treherbert at about 03:30 GMT.

Road closures and flooding in Pontyclun

And a man had to be rescued from his vehicle after it hit flood water at Tyla Garw Lane, Pontyclun, at 06:21.

Bus operator Stagecoach Wales said overnight flooding affected journey times on services between Aberdare and Pontypridd on Friday morning.

In Powys, an elderly woman raised the alarm after flood water entered her property at Llanwrtyd Wells.

Meanwhile, Welsh Water said a burst pipe had been affecting water supplies in Mold, Flint and Flint Mountain in Flintshire as well as Ruthin in Denbighshire.

The company has made water bottles available at Tesco in Mold.

"We're moving water around our network and tankering water into the mains to help keep customers in supply," a spokesman said.

An weather alert for strong winds in north Wales has also been lifted.
