An investigation is to take place into the cause of a "serious" fire at a disused pub.

Several roads were closed as firefighters tackled the blaze at the former Centurion pub in St Julians, Newport, while police advised people to avoid the area on Thursday evening.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was serious and advised people living nearby to keep their windows closed.

Nobody was injured.

Police said diversions were in place around Heather Road which officers warned may cause congestion.

The cause of the blaze will be investigated by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police.
