Usk Way was closed in both directions following the death

A man has been arrested following the death of an 82-year-old woman after she was hit by an HGV vehicle on a city centre main road.

The 45-year-old from Bedfordshire was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Gwent Police were called to Usk Way in Newport at about 09:45 BST following the accident.

The woman died at the scene and her family have been informed.

A large section of the road remains closed, and motorists had been asked to avoid the area.

Police said an investigation into the death was under way, and have appealed for witnesses and anyone with dash cam footage to come forward.
